16GB of VRAM Is Now the Most Common on Steam. The Fine Print Is Where It Gets Interesting.

For years the honest answer to "is 8GB enough" was that it depended on what you played, and the honest answer to "what does everyone actually have" was 8GB. Valve's August 2026 hardware survey settles the second question in a new direction. The most common amount of video memory on Steam is now 16GB, for the second month running, and the lead roughly doubled.
That is the headline, and it is true. It is also the kind of number that gets repeated without the population it was measured on, so this piece is the headline plus the fine print, with the parts most write-ups skipped.
The August numbers
Valve's combined view, which mixes Windows, macOS and Linux machines, gives video memory like this. The change column is month over month.

July was the crossover month, as TweakTown and others reported when that survey landed in August: 16GB at 25.90%, 8GB at 25.32%, a gap of 0.58 points. August stretched it to 1.18. Two months is not a trend and we would not call it one, but the direction matches every other row on the page: the shares at 4GB and below fell, the shares at 12GB and above held or rose.
The number in that table that deserves more attention than it got is the 8GB row. It went up. 8GB did not lose to 16GB in August; the sub-8GB cards lost to both. A quarter of Steam is on 8GB and the share is still growing as old 2GB and 4GB machines retire onto whatever is cheapest, which is still an 8GB card. The change is not that 8GB owners are leaving. It is that new buyers with more than $300 are arriving with 16GB.
Eight cores, with an asterisk
The other first in the July survey was the processor line: eight physical cores overtook six as the most common count. August held it, 28.04% to 27.43%.
Then look at the same row with the platform filter set to Windows only, which is a separate page on Valve's site that most coverage did not open.

On Windows, six cores still lead. The combined figure crosses because of macOS, where eight-core Apple silicon is 35.42% of machines and ten-core another 34.64%. That is not a criticism of the combined number; Valve publishes it and it describes Steam. It is a reason to be careful about what you conclude from it. The Windows gap closed by four tenths of a point in August, from 0.69 to 0.28, so if that holds the Windows crossover is a month or two out, and when it happens it will mean what people assume the July one meant.
The Linux column has its own story. Four-core processors are 32.29% of Linux systems on Steam, more than double their Windows share, and that lump is almost certainly the Steam Deck, whose custom AMD chip has four cores. When Linux share moves in this survey, it is usually the Deck moving.
What people are actually running
The Windows top fifteen, by card. This is the population that the VRAM debate is really about.

Fifteen cards, fifteen GeForces. Not one Radeon or Arc makes the list; the first one appears further down the page. The most common card on the platform is a 12GB part from 2021 that is no longer made, and the second is a laptop chip. The 5070, a 12GB card, is the fastest-growing desktop part and is about to pass the 4060 laptop for second place. The biggest single mover is the 5060 laptop GPU, up almost half a point in one month, which says something about where the new machines are coming from: 2026's back-to-school laptops, not desktops.
Cross that list against the VRAM table and the two stories fit together. The 8GB row is holding up because the 4060, 3050, 5060, 4060 Ti and both 60-class laptop chips are 8GB parts and they are six of the top ten. The 16GB row is growing because the 5060 Ti's 16GB version, the 5070 Ti, the 5080, and the Radeon RX 9070 and 9060 XT cards that do not make the top fifteen individually all report 16GB, and those are the cards a desktop buyer with more than $400 walked out with this year. The 12GB row barely moves because it is the 3060 and the 5070 trading places.
Where the catalog and the survey now agree
Our own number, from the graphics cards we track that launched in 2023 or later and carry a live price this week: 26 cards, of which 11 ship 16GB, 6 ship 12GB, 6 ship 8GB, and one each at 10GB, 24GB and 32GB. Under $300, four of the five are 8GB and the fifth is the 10GB Arc B570. Between $300 and $500, two of six. Above $500, none of fifteen.
Which is to say the market drew the 8GB line at roughly $400, as we counted in July, and the survey is the installed base catching up with the shelf. That lag is the useful thing to know if you are buying. The survey tells you what the median Steam user owns, and games are tuned for it: 8GB is why so many 2026 releases still list 8GB cards on their recommended tier, and why WARDOGS can put a GTX 1660 on its minimum line and still sell 1.5 million copies in three days. The catalog tells you what you can buy new, and above $400 it does not offer you the choice.

32GB gained half a point on 16GB in August, and 8GB systems left at the same rate. If that pace holds, 32GB becomes the most common amount of system memory some time in the second half of 2027. We will put that in writing and check it monthly, with one caveat that is really the whole caveat: the DDR5 market in 2026 has done things nobody predicted, and a 32GB kit at the prices we have been logging slows that crossover more than any other single variable. If it stalls, that is why.
Meanwhile the requirement sheets are already telling you the same thing the survey is. The two biggest launches of the last fortnight, The Blood of Dawnwalker and WARDOGS, both put 16GB of RAM on every tier and neither asks for 32GB anywhere. Games are built for the 41% row, not the 37% one.
What we are not claiming
Three things, so nobody cites this for more than it says.
The survey is opt-in and Valve does not publish its methodology beyond that, so month-to-month noise of a few tenths is normal and a single month's change in a small row means very little. The 32GB VRAM row moving 0.07 points is not a signal.
Valve's Windows-only page does not break out video memory the way the combined page does, so we cannot give you an 8GB-versus-16GB figure for Windows alone from the August data. For July, tbreak reported 8GB still leading on Windows at 33.20%, and nothing in the August platform pages suggests that flipped. If your question is "what does the typical Windows gamer have", the honest answer is still 8GB, by a margin, and the combined 16GB lead is partly a macOS and unified-memory story.
And our catalog count is a count of models, not of sales. Eleven 16GB models on sale does not mean 16GB outsells 8GB; the survey is the only one of the two that measures what people bought.
