RuneScape: Dragonwilds left Early Access on September 15, seventeen months after it first went on sale, and it landed on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC in the same week. Jagex kept the price at $29.99, which it had promised on September 3 it would do. By the following Tuesday it sat sixth on Steam's weekly top-sellers list, behind WARDOGS, FC 27, Diablo IV, a Trails game and Baldur's Gate 3.

Then the launch-week reviews came in. The all-time Steam score is still Very Positive, 81% of 31,384 reviews as of the 23rd. The last thirty days read 74% of 2,097. That gap is the story of the week: a game a lot of people like, and a launch build that a meaningful number of them cannot get to run. Both halves are worth taking seriously, so this covers what the game asks for, what your hardware gets you on our model, and what to do when it will not start.

What Jagex asks for

The Steam listing carries two tiers and no stated frame-rate targets, which is normal and mildly annoying.

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10Windows 10
CPUCore i3-8100 or Ryzen 5 1600Core i5-10600 or Ryzen 5 3600

APIDirectX 12DirectX 12
Storage25GB25GB

The minimum row is more truthful than most 2026 spec sheets. A GTX 1060 really can draw this game. It cannot draw it quickly, because the engine underneath is Unreal 5 with Lumen lighting, Nanite geometry and virtual shadow maps, and nothing on that list is cheap. There is no ray-tracing requirement, which is why a card from 2016 makes the cut at all.

The CPU line barely matters. A quad-core i3 from 2017 is on it, and (this is the part that surprised us) the estimator agrees. Every pairing below came back GPU-limited, including that i3 next to the 1060. Dragonwilds is a survival game with a handful of players in a world, not a hundred-player shooter, and the simulation load reflects that.

What the cards people own get you

These are estimates from the same model that runs our FPS calculator, using the Dragonwilds profile we built from the engine features and the published tiers. They are ranges at high settings, not benchmarks, and we have not seen a public benchmark suite for the 1.0 build yet. When one lands we will re-rate the profile.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D + RTX 5080144-194105-14163-85

Three things fall out of that table.

The minimum tier is a 30s-and-40s experience at 1080p, and that is before you turn Lumen down. Anyone running a 1060, an RX 580 or a 1650 should go into the settings expecting to drop the global preset to Low and lean on FSR or DLSS. It will run. It will not look like the trailer.

The recommended tier is the first place 1080p at 60 is comfortable and 1440p at 60 is possible. A 2070 or 5700 XT, or anything that scores like them, is the real floor for playing this the way Jagex meant it to be seen. The RTX 3060, which is still the most common card on Steam, clears it with room.

From a 5060 or 9060 XT upward the game stops being a question at 1080p and becomes one at 1440p. The 5070 and 9070 XT are where 1440p high-refresh starts, and 4K at 60 needs a 5080-class card or upscaling. Put your own pair into the calculator and it will show the range for this game next to whatever else you play.

Why it crashes, and the order to try things in

The Very Positive score says the game is fine once it runs. The 74% says a lot of people spent launch week looking at a frozen Jagex logo, a black screen, or an Unreal fatal-error box. Jagex's own 1.0.0.4 hotfix on September 18 fixed three things: world saves corrupting when you exit a session, a crash from casting a fishing rod at a player-built structure, and a crash from adjusting certain settings. It did not claim to fix startup crashes, and it left one bug open (worlds vanishing from the world list) that was still being worked with the console platform teams.

So the startup problems are on you to sort, and the fix guides that sprang up in the last week mostly agree on the list. In the order we would try them:

  1. Update the graphics driver. Nvidia's Game Ready releases have named Dragonwilds since Early Access, AMD and Intel owners should be on the current Adrenalin or Arc release, and an out-of-date driver is the most common cause of the DirectX 12 fatal error at launch. Intel graphics owners get a specific message about the driver having "known issues in D3D12" and should take it literally.
  2. Verify the game files in Steam. Boring, free, and it catches the partial-download case.
  3. Change the rendering API. Right-click the game in Steam, Properties, and put -dx11 in the launch options. If DX11 introduces visual glitches, try -vulkan instead. A lot of the "crashes after twenty minutes" reports clear on one of these two.
  4. Clear the shader cache. Close the game and delete the D3DDriverRTCache folder inside the game's Saved directory under %LocalAppData%\RSDragonwilds. The engine rebuilds it on the next launch, which takes a minute and fixes the crashes caused by a cache built against an older driver.
  5. Turn frame generation off and cap the frame rate. Frame generation on a card that is already short of memory produces out-of-memory crashes rather than extra frames.
  6. Close overlays (Discord, GeForce, Steam's own if you are desperate) and any RGB or monitoring software that hooks into games.
  7. If nothing above works, one player on the Steam forum traced a "multiple instances of game detected" error followed by a Sentry fatal error to the game failing to create its files in the RSDragonwilds AppData folder at all. Copying a working folder from another install fixed it. That is a last resort, but it is a real one.

One caution about a claim you will see repeated: several fix guides state that any driver older than August 2026 produces the fatal D3D12 error. We could not find Jagex saying that anywhere, so we are not going to repeat it as fact. Update the driver first because it is the most likely fix, not because of a cutoff date nobody official has published.

The Intel 13th and 14th gen wrinkle

There is one crash cause that has nothing to do with the game. According to players relaying the developers on Discord, crashes are common on 13th and 14th generation Intel desktop processors, and the recommended fix is a BIOS update. That matches what those chips have been doing to Unreal Engine games since 2024: the instability that Intel eventually addressed with microcode shows up first as "out of video memory" and shader-compile crashes in UE5 titles. If you are on a 13600K, 13700K, 14600K or 14700K-class part, a game crashing is a prompt to check the BIOS date before anything else, and to make sure the board is running Intel's default power profile rather than the motherboard vendor's.

Should you buy hardware for it?

Probably not, and that is a compliment to the game. Dragonwilds asks less than almost any big 2026 release. If your card is a 3060 or better you are fine at 1080p. If it is a 2070 or a 5700 XT you are fine at 1080p with a couple of settings turned down. The people with a real decision are the ones on a 1060, a 1650 or an RX 580, and for them the honest advice is the same as it is for every UE5 game this year: the cheapest new card that changes the experience is a 5060 or a 9060 XT, and the 16GB version of whichever you pick is the one that will still be fine in two years. The build generator will price a whole machine around either, and if you are only replacing the card, the best GPU for your CPU pages will tell you whether the rest of the system can keep up with it.

Do not buy a card in a hurry because of this game. It is $29.99, it runs on a decade-old GPU, and the crashes are a driver and cache problem, not a hardware one.

Short version

  • Out of Early Access September 15 on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox and PC. Still $29.99. Sixth on Steam's top sellers for the week of the 15th.
  • All-time reviews 81% positive of 31,384; last thirty days 74% of 2,097. The game is liked, the launch build is not.
  • Minimum is a GTX 1060 and a quad-core i3. On our model that is 37 to 51 fps at 1080p. Recommended is an RTX 2070 or RX 5700 XT, which reads 70 to 94.
  • Every pairing we ran is GPU-limited. The CPU line is the least important thing on the sheet.
  • Crashing: driver, verify, -dx11 or -vulkan, delete D3DDriverRTCache, frame generation off, overlays off. Intel 13th and 14th gen owners, BIOS first.
  • Patch 1.0.0.4 (September 18) fixed save corruption on exit and two crashes. Missing worlds still open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum PC requirements for RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

From the Steam listing: Windows 10, an Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 8GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Radeon RX 5600 XT or Intel Arc A750, DirectX 12 and 25GB of storage. Jagex does not state a frame-rate target for that tier. Our model puts the GTX 1060 at 37 to 51 fps at 1080p, so treat it as a 30s-to-40s experience on lowered settings.

What are the recommended requirements?

A Core i5-10600 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM, and a GeForce RTX 2070 6GB or Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB. On our estimator that pairing lands at 70 to 94 fps at 1080p and 50 to 68 at 1440p, which is the first tier where 1440p at 60 is realistic.

Why does Dragonwilds crash on launch after the 1.0 update?

There is no single cause. The fixes players report working, roughly in order of how often they help: update the graphics driver, verify the game files, add -dx11 or -vulkan to the Steam launch options, delete the D3DDriverRTCache folder inside the game's Saved directory so the shader cache rebuilds, turn off frame generation, and close overlays. On 13th and 14th generation Intel desktop CPUs the developers have pointed to a BIOS update.

What did patch 1.0.0.4 fix?

Released September 18, it fixed world saves becoming corrupted when exiting a session, a crash when casting a fishing rod at a player-built structure, and a crash when changing certain settings. Worlds disappearing from the world list were still under investigation, and crossplay with Nintendo Switch 2 and the Jagex Launcher was paused until those platforms processed the patch.

Is Dragonwilds CPU or GPU heavy?

GPU heavy. It is an Unreal Engine 5 game with Lumen, Nanite and virtual shadow maps, and every pairing we ran through the estimator came back GPU-limited, including a Core i3-8100 next to a GTX 1060. The processor on the minimum line is enough; the graphics card is what sets your frame rate.
