GeForce 621.14: What It Fixes, and Who Should Install It

Nvidia released GeForce Game Ready driver 621.14 on November 4. It is the regular release that was supposed to clean up after 621.01, the October driver that blanked monitors and froze video on some systems.

The release notes list exactly two fixes, and the open issues section reads "N/A". Treat that second part carefully. An empty list means Nvidia isn't tracking a known problem in this build today. 621.01 looked fine on release day too, and its black screens took about two days to surface. This post is being written one day after release, which is too early for anyone to say how 621.14 behaves across real systems, us included.

The two fixes, in Nvidia's words

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: Game may display incorrect visual colors [6972531]"

"Fixed an issue where video playback may freeze or black screen on some GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs/RTX Spark after updating to GRD 621.01. [6979343]"

The second line is word for word what hotfix 621.12 promised on October 27. Nvidia said that fix would fold into the next regular driver, and it did.

Everything else in the release is support for new content: World of Warcraft: Forever, the new Slaughter Mode in DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations, and DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for Hogwarts Legacy and War Thunder. We covered what DLSS 5 costs and which cards can run it back in September, and two more titles do not change that verdict.

One line deeper in the notes matters to a small crowd. As of this driver, Nvidia's OpenCL stack defaults to its newer Clang and NVVM 7.0 compiler, replacing the legacy one. Games won't notice. If you run OpenCL compute work, test it before you update a machine you depend on.

The two groups the notes leave out

RTX 40 owners. Our 621.01 write-up found reports on the RTX 4090 alongside the much larger pile of RTX 5080 complaints. Nvidia's fix names RTX 50 and RTX Spark only. That doesn't prove an RTX 40 card stays broken, because the bug may be shared and simply described by the cards Nvidia confirmed. It does mean nobody has promised you a fix. If you rolled back and your system is stable, you lose little by waiting a week for reports to pile up.

Phantom Blade Zero players. S-GAME's launch-day advice was to roll back to 617.42 and "stay on this version until NVIDIA releases its next driver update." Taken literally, that moment arrived on November 4. But 621.14's notes don't contain the words Phantom Blade anywhere, and as of November 5 we could not find a statement from the studio saying the instability is gone. Since S-GAME never described what the instability was, there is no listed fix to point at. If the game is smooth on 617.42, staying put costs you nothing. If you want to try the new driver, try it and compare the same fight or area before and after.

Installing it

The Nvidia App will offer 621.14 on its Drivers tab, or you can get it through Nvidia's driver page. If you are coming from a rollback or a hotfix, choose Custom (Advanced) and tick Perform a clean installation, so old profiles and settings aren't layered under the new build. Expect your custom Control Panel settings to reset.

Going from 621.01 or 621.12 with no problems, a plain express install is fine.

Afterward, watch Event Viewer for a day if you were hit by the October bug. Under Windows Logs, then System, filter by the source nvlddmkm. Fresh Event ID 153 entries while video plays would mean the fix didn't reach your setup, and that is a reason to go back to 617.42 and post in Nvidia's feedback thread with your card and monitor details.

Where this leaves the October mess

For RTX 50 owners, the path is finally simple: one certified driver with the fix inside, no hotfix to hunt down, and no giving up Advanced Shader Delivery for Modern Warfare 4 by sitting on 617.42. That is the real reason to move, more than anything in the feature list.

Everyone else can afford a few days of patience. A driver with a clean known-issues list and a one-day track record has earned a try on a gaming PC, and not much more than that yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GeForce 621.14 fix?

Two listed bugs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could display incorrect colors (bug 6972531), and video playback could freeze or go black on some GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and RTX Spark systems after updating to 621.01 (bug 6979343). The second is the same fix Nvidia shipped in hotfix 621.12 on October 27.

Should I install 621.14 if I am on hotfix 621.12?

Yes. The video fix from 621.12 is now in a WHQL driver, and you also pick up the Modern Warfare 4 color fix and the new game support.

Does 621.14 fix Phantom Blade Zero?

The release notes do not mention the game. S-GAME told players to stay on 617.42 until Nvidia's next driver, and 621.14 is that driver, but as of November 5 we found no statement from the studio about it. If the game runs well on 617.42, there is no rush.

Does 621.14 work on Windows 10?

Yes. The file name says win11, but Nvidia's release notes cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
