The short answer

A balanced build means no part you paid real money for sits waiting on a part you cheaped out on. Five checks decide it: the CPU/GPU match at your resolution, RAM capacity in dual channel, PSU headroom, a monitor the GPU can feed, and an SSD for the OS and games. Run them in that order - the expensive mistakes live at the top.

"Balanced" gets treated like a mystical property of good builds. It is actually just proportional spending: performance-per-dollar falls off a cliff whenever one component races ahead of the rest, because the system runs at the speed of its slowest relevant part. The checklist below is ordered by how much money each mistake wastes.

1. The CPU/GPU pair, at your resolution

This is the big one, and it is resolution-dependent - the same two parts can be balanced at 4K and mismatched at 1080p, because 1080p leans on the CPU and 4K on the GPU. 3. PSU: headroom, not heroics

The power supply should carry your GPU's transient spikes with room to spare - modern cards spike well above their average draw - but a build does not get faster by doubling the wattage. Size it with real numbers for your parts, add upgrade headroom, and spend the savings elsewhere. An underspecced PSU is the one imbalance that crashes rather than slows.

4. The monitor is part of the build

A 60Hz panel on a machine that renders 140 FPS is throwing away more than half of what the GPU produces; a 4K screen over a mid-range card asks for frames that will not come. The screen decides what your components' work is worth - match it to the GPU deliberately.

5. Storage: one line, no drama

The OS and your games live on an NVMe SSD; capacity to taste. Load times and texture streaming stopped being a build-balance question once SATA died - just avoid putting a modern build on a spinning drive and move on.
