Can an Old CPU Handle a New GPU?

The short answer

It will work - PCIe compatibility guarantees that much. Whether it's worth it depends on how big a card you're dropping in and what resolution you play at. An old CPU costs you little at 4K, where the GPU does 80% of the work, and a lot at 1080p, where the CPU caps your frame rate no matter what card you buy. The mistake isn't upgrading the GPU in an old PC; it's buying more GPU than the CPU can feed.

The pattern to read from that table: one column in, the verdicts are already CPU-limited, and each GPU tier you climb makes it worse. The card runs; the frames it was priced for don't arrive.

Resolution changes the answer more than the CPU does

So if you're on a 4K or 1440p-high-refresh monitor and the budget only covers one part, the GPU-first upgrade in an old PC is defensible. At 1080p it mostly isn't - the CPU is your ceiling there, and no GPU purchase raises a CPU ceiling.

The dead-platform problem
