The average gaming PC (June 2026)

From the Steam Hardware Survey, the largest recurring census of gaming hardware.

  • The most common gaming setup is an RTX 4060-class GPU with 16GB of RAM. Not a flagship in sight.
  • The single most-used GPU overall is the GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (4.02%); the top desktop card is the GeForce RTX 3060 (3.88%), a 2021 mid-ranger.
  • Old hardware refuses to die: the GTX 1650 (2019) still holds 2.63% share and the GTX 1060 (2016) 1.54%. Roughly half of Steam's top-50 GPU list launched in 2022 or earlier.
  • Our read, since we run a bottleneck checker all day: review coverage is about $2,000 builds, but the median real-world gaming PC is a mid-range card from two generations ago. Balance matters more than budget there, not less.

GPU prices vs launch MSRP

The BottleneckPC GPU Price Index tracks street price against launch MSRP for all 9 current-generation cards, refreshed daily. 1 of them (RTX 5090) has no first-party retail listing today, so its figure is the last price a retailer stood behind rather than one you can pay right now. We keep it in the index and say so, because dropping the priciest cards on the days they are hardest to buy would flatter the average.

  • Current-gen GPUs average 44% over launch MSRP as of July 2026.
  • Most inflated: NVIDIA RTX 5090 at $4,600 street vs $1,999 launch (+130%) - last verified figure, no first-party listing today. Closest to honest: AMD RX 9070 (+4%).
  • Best performance-per-dollar right now: NVIDIA RTX 5060 at ~$392 ($6.13/score point on our 0-100 scale).
  • CPUs are the calm side of the market: most sell at or below MSRP. Best value: Ryzen 5 7400F at ~$115.

RAM prices in the DRAM shortage

Memory is the most distorted part of a 2026 build. These are floors from the 67 DDR5 kits we track, not launch prices - 45 at 32GB and 3 at 16GB, which is why the 32GB figure is the one worth quoting and the 16GB one is a data point.

  • Cheapest 32GB DDR5 kit we track: ~$278 (Kingston FURY Renegade DDR5-6400 CL32 32GB (2x16GB)), last confirmed rather than live - no first-party listing today.
  • Cheapest 16GB DDR5 kit: ~$215. Not coincidentally, 16GB is the most common amount of RAM on Steam - upgrades are waiting out the shortage.

Price velocity: DDR4 is frozen, DDR5 is not

We hold continuous daily pricing at the same retailer for three name-brand kits from July 20 to August 1, 2026. It is a small sample and we would rather say so than round it up, but the split inside it is clean. The DDR4 kit - a Corsair Vengeance 3200 CL16 2x8 - did not change price once in thirteen days. Both DDR5 32GB kits repriced repeatedly over the same stretch: a Kingston Fury Beast 5200 CL40 2x16 climbed 15.9% ($487.57 to $565.24) across seven separate changes, and a Fury Beast 5600 CL36 2x16 drifted down 1.8% across five. Being precise about what that is and is not: one DDR4 kit and two DDR5 kits is a hint, not a finding, and we are not going to claim the DDR4 market is frozen on the strength of a single SKU whose seller happens not to have touched it. What is fair to say is that the two DDR5 kits repriced twelve times between them in the same window the DDR4 kit sat still, so a DDR5 buyer should check the price on the day they buy.

A correction, since this page asks to be cited. Until August 1 this section reported that 22 of 25 tracked kits had not moved at all. That was wrong, and the error is worth naming: most of those kits were priced once on July 20 and never re-observed, and our analysis counted a missing reading as “no change.” Once the sample is restricted to kits we actually priced every day, the finding reverses. We have removed the old claim rather than restate it.

The same dataset our build generator compares against: every in-stock prebuilt gaming desktop we track, bucketed by GPU.

  • 145 in-stock machines tracked across 35 GPU models; median asking price $1,579.
  • 41 machines (28%) sell under $1,000 - the tier where, at 2026 memory prices, buying frequently beats building.
  • Cheapest current-generation machine: $949 (Intel Arc B580). Try assembling that from parts at retail memory prices.

Used vs new: what the secondhand market says

Median live eBay pricing (parts with 5+ active listings) against the same part's tracked new-retail price. This is the corner of the market most coverage never quantifies. Only cards with a currently verified new price are counted: 16 further models with a live used market were left out because no first-party retail listing exists for them today, and a comparison against a price nobody is charging is not a comparison.

  • Across 21 GPU models with active used markets, the median used price averages within 4% of new retail - the traditional used discount has collapsed to par.
  • Largest dollar gap: AMD RX 7800 XT - $550 used median vs $895 new (684 live listings).
  • The inversion nobody talks about: on 21 tracked parts the used market prices ABOVE new retail - and these are cards you can still buy new today, so it is not the usual discontinued-hardware scarcity story. Someone is paying a premium for secondhand silicon that is sitting on a shelf.

  • Across 3 GPU models with 5+ in-stock variants, the cheapest-to-priciest gap on the same chip averages 32%.
  • Widest spread: NVIDIA RTX 5080 - $1,479 to $2,150 for the same GPU (45%, 10 listings).
  • Practical read: quoting a GPU's "price" without naming the exact card can be off by hundreds of dollars. Our per-model pages list every in-stock variant, cheapest first.

Where these numbers come from

The dataset behind this page scores 310 CPUs and 143 GPUs on a calibrated 0-100 gaming scale, with prices reconciled daily from live retailer data and hand-verified for discontinued parts. Behind it sits a part registry of 1125 hand-verified retail listings, 46 board-partner GPU listings, 145 tracked prebuilt machines, and live used-market medians on 75parts - several hundred fresh price observations land in the warehouse every morning. Steam figures are from Valve's June 2026 hardware survey. One honest caveat: our price floors reflect the retailers we track (Amazon and Newegg), so a local microcenter deal can beat them.
